"I don't know how this compares in action to the smaller model which is half the price. I opted for this version because of the apparently sturdy design, more powerful motor and the handy extension arm. It works extremely well cutting through a large ceramic tile in 10-30 seconds. The cuts are clean and easily reproducible. There is provision to cut angles and mitres. It does make a mess but it can be used indoors and is not too noisy. The splash guard is flimsy and broke on first use; needs treating with caution because without it you will soon be covered in slurry. Would buy again, should have bought sooner."
"The 650 Watt electric tile saw fetaured in the catalogue is a vitrex product, constructed to a high specification, and designed to enable the DIY enthusiast to achieve professional results when cutting tiles. The machine is supplied with a 180mm diameter continuous rim diamond tipped saw blade, which allows the user to achieve chip-free cuts in tiles over 60cm in length, thanks to an adjustable built in adjustable support table edge. I used the tile saw to complete a Travertine tiled floor, quickly discovered the the best way to avoid unexpected breaks in the cutting edge is to start from the opposite end of a proposed cut for a distance of 2" and then reverse the tile and complete the cut from the opposite edge, slowing the advance down to a very slow and measured speed to complete the cut. Any slight knib left on a tile edge can be removed by applying the tile edge surface to the side of the blade. The machine has been cleverly designed to apply a continuous supply of water as a lubricant to the cutting rim of the blade, and it is most important to always ensure that the water level remains replenished as cuts are made. The resultant slurry can obliterate a pencil line made on the tile surface, and I recommend regularly washing the machine out with a hose pipe to remove the slurry and ensure clean water is circulated to the table top of the machine. It is necessary to fit the blade to the machine and also the top saw blade guard, and an appropriate spanner is included to complete this assembly. It is important to ensure that the saw guard supporting bracket is correctly aligned with the blade edge before tightening the two Philips headed screws, and this will ensure that the cut tile will not bind on the bracket after leaving the saw blade edge. The saw allows quite intricate cuts to be made around pipework and skirting board profiles, and precise control of the cutting is easy to achieve. Suffice it to say that the final job looks very professional and could not have been achieved without the use of this machine. There is a thermal overload cut out built into the ON/OFF switch which provides additional reassurance that the motor will be protected whilst in use. An excellent product, supported by outstanding customer service support from Wickes, has ensured a high standard of finish has been achieved. Unreservedly applauded for providing an exceptionally high standard of finish on the saw, with ease of cleaning of the main reservoir with a hose pipe, followed by a wipe-over with a cloth to dry the machine, it will provide a long and durable service life. I would strongly recommend the blade be removed from the saw once the work has been completed and both sides of the blade wiped dry to prevent rusting, with the same provision of care to the hinged table top which is a pressed steel component, liable to rust if left wet."
