  • Unfit for claimed duties

Pros:  claims to be suitable for both metal and wood, claims a white colour, dries reasonably quickly, does it have less impct on envrnmnt than oil-basd?
Cons:  appears not to work as a satsfctry primer on steel, appears 2 not work adequately as undercoat on wood, does not work adequately as an undercoat on metal

"I bought it because it claimed to be suitable for metal and wood and I am painting metal casements set in wood frames, and because it was described as 'White' and my final coat will be white-ish. It is not suitable for my Crittall metal casement windows. They are iron/steel. Rust has appeared in two days, before I've had time to undercoat. Not that I should have to undercoat, as the tin also claims the paint to be an undercoat as well as primer. Its not. Its too thin and does not have good covering ability, neither on metal, bare wood nor pre-painted wood. It is not fit for the duty claimed on the tin. I note it is water based. This is the first time to my knowledge that I have used a water based primer (&'undercoat'). If they are all like this then I have already used my last water based Primer/Undercoat. Logical in a way, how does rust form on rust-prone metal? (clue: water, air). But even so, there should be more pigment in the paint, so as to deposit some white. Hence pretty useless on wood owing to this poor coverage. Even a second coat does not 'hide' a colour that is not identical. Hints: 1.Be prepared to use at least 3 coats if in lieu of a separate undercoat. 2. Use fully loaded brush if possible and apply as thickly as possible to compensate for the poor level of pigmentation. 3. Fully consider using instead separate primers and an undercoat. 4. Fully consider using oil based products instead. 5. Consider replacing windows instead of painting them."

  • Far too thin

"As with previous reviews. Being water based, this paint is far too thin. It ideally needs 2 applications, something I can do without when painting the outside of my house."

  • Not impressed

    Pros:  cheaper than oil based
Cons:  does not cover like oil based paint

"I wish I had realized this paint was water based. I've just used it to prime/undercoat a garage door and I have to say I was not that impressed. The coverage is thin and erratic and brush marks all too obvious. It covered the old paint surface (just) but, where the original galvanized surface was exposed the paint just would not stick. I suppose a second coat would work but, I'd have to buy another tin first - an unnecessary extra cost since it took nearly a whole tin first time round. The benefits of cheaper price and easy brush cleaning are negated by poorer finish. To my mind a water based primer just does not work - oil based in future. What to do do next?"
