The Wickes name goes as far back as 1854, when Henry Dunn Wickes and his brother started a modest operation in the local lumber business in Michigan, USA.

As part of the Travis Perkins Group, Wickes environmental management controls are externally certified to the international standard ISO 14001 and Wickes contributes to the achievement of performance targets against which progress is publicly reported.
More than a third of Wickes products contain some timber or timber fibre. Much of the timber used in these products is produced by Forest Stewardship Council ® (FSC®) certified companies. FSC is an international organisation that promotes responsible management of the world's forests. Buying FSC certified products from Wickes guarantees that they contain timber harvested from forests managed according to strict environmental, social and economic standards. You'll see the FSC logo on many of our timber products and this is your assurance that the timber has come from a responsible source.
Wickes has developed a waste management strategy that aims to reduce the volume of waste sent to landfill sites, increasing the percentage of recycled or reclaimed material used by the company.
Plastic and cardboard packaging is recycled at our Northampton distribution centre and all stores that can accommodate them now have a separate skip for recycling cardboard.
Future projects currently under development include plans to recycle plastic packaging waste produced by individual stores and to reduce the amount of packaging you take home around our products.
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive came into force on 1 July 07.
Under the legislation electrical products must be marked with a crossed out wheelie bin symbol , in order to help consumers identify that the product must not be disposed of with household waste, but instead should be taken to a WEEE collection point for recycling.
Wickes has joined together with other UK Retailers to establish a national fund - the Distributor Take-back Scheme.
The Distributor Take-back Scheme provides funding to Local Council Civic Amenity Sites, enabling them to receive electrical waste from consumers and arrange for it to be recycled. As Wickes is a member of scheme we do not offer a WEEE take-back services in our stores.
The Waste Batteries & Accumulators Regulations came into force on 1 February 2010.

All Wickes stores contain battery recycling bins to enable customers to recycle household batteries. Customers are not required to purchase new batteries when returning old batteries.

In October 2015 England followed suit with Wales and Scotland and on the 5th October introduced a 5p charge for single use carrier bags. All monies raised from the sale of carrier bags through Wickes will be donated to good causes
