Filling in holes and cracks is a key part of prepping your walls for decorating (see ‘How to prepare your walls and ceilings for decorating’.) Thankfully, carrying out these minor repairs only involves a few easy steps, a couple of tools and some basic materials. Simply follow this video guide and you’ll soon have a smooth surface that’s ready to be painted.

Preparation & planning

Wash the area around the hole with sugar soap and make sure it’s completely clean. Remove any bits of loose plaster or flaking paint from around the hole before you start. You can do this by using a putty knife or paint scraper.

Always check manufacturer's instructions to check how long your filler should be left to dry before painting.

Hints & tips

If you are using a powdered filler, check manufacturer's instuctions for how long the filler will be workable for once prepared. Remember not to make up more than you are able to apply in that time to reduce wastage.

Whenever you’re sanding, wear a dust mask and ensure the area is well ventilated by opening doors and windows.
