How to build a garden bench and table

There’s no time like the summer to get inspired by DIY, so why not build your own garden bench and table set to make the most of the weather. All you need is a few planks of timber, some tools and a bit of elbow grease. We have everything you need to get the job done, including a step by step Project Guide and How-to video below.

To enter, head online or to your nearest Wickes store, pick up the materials outlined above, grab your tools and get building your garden furniture. You can use our design as a starting point but be as creative as you can and make it your own! Then, take a photo of your finished masterpiece and upload it to the Wickes Facebook page with the hashtag #projectbench. Job done.

Project Bench social media competition terms and conditions


This competition is open to any person resident in the United Kingdom who is eighteen (18) years of age or older at the time of entry. Employees of Wickes Building Supplies Limited (“Wickes”), its respective parent, subsidiary or affiliated companies or any other person professionally connected with this promotion are not permitted to enter.


Entrants are required to meet the eligibility criteria stated above. To enter the competition to win one of three £1,000 Wickes vouchers, participants should construct their bench and table and then upload a photo of their completed project on Facebook, via with the hashtag #projectbench.

If this is an entrant’s first project they should include a short account with their photo of no more than 50 words, detailing how they got on and what inspired them to complete it.

This competition is open on Facebook between Wednesday 30/07/14 – Tuesday 09/09/14.

Only one (1) entry per person will be accepted. Entry constitutes full and unconditional acceptance of these Terms and Conditions. Wickes is not responsible for lost, corrupted or delayed entries. Wickes reserves the right to disqualify anyone in breach of these Terms and Conditions.

No responsibility is accepted for entries which are lost, corrupted, incomplete or for any failure to capture entry information. Use of false details will result in disqualification. The entry must be made by the person entering the competition – entries sent through third parties, agencies or by automated means (such as scripts and macros) will not be accepted.

To the extent permitted by law, Wickes accepts no liability for any loss, damage or injury arising as a consequence of project advice provided by Wickes. The reader is advised to follow all safety instructions carefully, wear the correct protective clothing and, where appropriate, follow all manufacturer’s instructions.

Entrants confirm by their entry that: Facebook is not the promoter of this competition and they fully release Facebook from any liability in connection with this Competition; This Competition is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by or associated with Facebook; and by entering this competition entrants are providing their information to the promoter and not to Facebook. The personal contact information provided will only be used to contact entrants if they are potential winners. Any questions, comments or complaints regarding the competition are to be directed to the Promoter.


This competition will run for forty two (42) days from Wednesday 30/07/14 –  Tuesday 09/09/14.



The winners will be judged by Wickes’ partner Absolute Radio on 10/09/14 against the following three categories and criteria:

  1. The Most Ambitious Bench - The best extension or customisation of our standard design.

  2. The Most Creative Bench - The best use of wood treatment, colour, accessories and setting.

  3. The Best First Project - The most inspiring account of tackling a table and bench project for the first time.

If a potential winner cannot be contacted, through no fault of Wickes, within three (3) days after the first attempt to contact the potential winner, an alternative winner will be selected at random. The winners may be required to participate in further publicity or advertising.


Wickes will automatically disqualify any entrant who: (i) makes an entry which is incomplete or illegible or (ii) submits entries in excess of the entry limit described above.


There are 3 prizes available in total. They will each be three £1,000 Wickes vouchers. No cash alternatives available. Wickes reserves the right to substitute the prizes with prizes of equal or greater value. The prize will be posted to the winning entrant within 28 days after the prize draw has been made. Wickes accepts no responsibility for lost or stolen items. If you accept a prize you will be liable for all applicable taxes relating to the prize.


The winner will be required to supply his/her name and postal address via the direct message function (Twitter) or the private message function (Facebook) to Wickes for the purpose of prize fulfilment. Each winner consents to his/her surname being made publicly available upon request. Winners’ names will be available upon request for a period of 28 days after the final draw date by written request to


The promoter’s decision in respect of all matters to do with the competition will be final and no correspondence will be entered into regarding either this promotion or these Terms and Conditions. In the unlikely event of a dispute, Wickes’ decision shall be final. Wickes reserves the right to amend, modify, cancel or withdraw this promotion at any time without notice.


If any provision or part of these terms is deemed void or otherwise unenforceable in law then that provision or part shall be deemed excluded and the remainder of these Terms shall remain in force.


These terms, the conduct of this promotion and the interpretation and enforcement of these Terms and Conditions shall be exclusively governed and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales, unless you are a resident of Scotland or Northern Ireland , in which case you may choose the law of your own country of residence.
