Wickes has been a proud supporter of national blood cancer charity Leukaemia Research since October 2006.
Leukaemia Research is the only national charity devoted exclusively to improving treatments, finding cures and learning how to prevent leukaemia, Hodgkin’s lymphoma and other lymphomas, myeloma and the other related blood disorders. There are currently over 110,000 people living with a blood cancer in the UK, with 24,500 newly diagnosed cases every year.
To date, Wickes colleagues have raised over £400,000 from their imaginative, bold and passionate fundraising activities. The astonishing amount of money raised so far is a reflection of the extraordinary effort that colleagues have put into their activities and their dedication to the fight against all blood cancers.
Over the next five years, Leukaemia Research urgently needs to raise over £100 million to commit to new research across the UK. From basic laboratory research to clinical trials with patients, Leukaemia Research is committed to saving lives by funding high quality, carefully selected research throughout the UK.
Wickes is helping Leukaemia Research achieve this by raising money in stores and delivery centres across the UK and at our head office in Harrow. Every activity from fancy dress days, to charity dinners, to Managing Director Jeremy Bird climbing the three highest peaks in the UK, has been undertaken to raise money!
Wickes is continuing to support Leukaemia Research throughout 2008, with key events including Beefy’s Great British Walk in October, which will see Wickes colleagues and customers walking alongside cricketing legend Sir Ian Botham, to raise money for research into childhood leukaemia.
There will also be charity collections in stores across the country over the weekend of the 30th and 31st August, 2008, where colleagues will be joined in store by Leukaemia Research volunteers to collect donations.
November will see the annual charity dinner, which in 2007 raised over £100,000 through ticket sales, raffle and a fantastic auction at the new Wembley stadium.
The relationship with Leukaemia Research is going from strength to strength. Wickes have already made a huge difference to the lives of the children and adults affected by blood cancers in the UK and will continue to do so with enthusiastic, passionate fundraising and their dedication in the fight against all blood cancers.
