Hints and Tips:

• Doors generally require 2mm of space between the frame around the top and sides, while the bottom should have a minimum space of 6mm (12mm over carpet).
• Carefully plane away any excess material, periodically offering the door up to the frame to check for sizing.
• Support the door by tapping wedges of the appropriate height under the door using a mallet.
• Hinges should be placed about 175mm (7in) from the top of the door and about 250mm (10in) from the bottom.
• With the door in position, mark the location of each hinge on the door and frame.
• Remove the door and draw an outline of each hinge on the side of the door, mark the required depth with the marking gauge and remove the excess material using the hammer and chisel.
• Check that the door fits correctly by first hanging it with a single screw in each hinge. Chisel out additional material from beneath the hinges if the latch side is too tight or insert a thin piece of cardboard beneath the hinge to help stop the door straining against the hinge.
• Use a third, central hinge with heavier doors or doors hung in humid locations (bathrooms, kitchens, etc).
• Screw size may vary depending on the thickness of the door frame material.
