In early 2012 Wickes commissioned an independent report, 'The Voice of Britain's Building Trade'.
In research conducted by Wickes amongst 500 UK tradesmen and 2,000 UK homeowners, we uncovered building trade-centric issues that need to be addressed across apprenticeships, accreditation and around the much-publicised Green Deal.
We then invited key industry leaders for a roundtable discussion to uncover the most important issues for today's building trade. The discussion identified the root causes of issues raised by the Wickes research, and touched on some bold solutions.
The report calls for the livelihoods of UK tradesman to be future-proofed in three ways:
1. Improve practical training for young people.
2. Protect tradesmen and homeowners by reducing VAT.
3. Use the Green Deal to up-skill the industry and upgrade 95% of UK housing stock.
