How to build a kitchen island

Islands are an attractive feature that turn any kitchen into a social space. In this video, you’ll learn how to create a stylish and stable kitchen island from two base cabinets and a wooden worktop. You’ll find out where best to position your island, how much space you’ll need, how to add seating with an overhang, install a side panel and a back panel, attach your worktop, and fasten the plinth into place. There’s even advice on how to fix the kitchen island to your kitchen floor.

Preparation & Planning

Think carefully about what size island your kitchen can accommodate, and where it should be positioned. Take into consideration any overhang you might want (for seating), and allow for at least 120cm of aisle space around each side.

The L-brackets should allow your wooden worktop to expand and this prevents the wood from buckling. Even so, it's a good idea to treat a wood worktop with oil to enhance it's appearance and protect it from general wear and tear.

Hints & tips

Your kitchen island can act as extra storage as well as additional work surface. However, it's well worth planning out where the doors on your island will open to avoid clashing with appliances.

Ask for help when lifting your worktop into place, as it will be heavy. When using drills, make sure you use safety goggles and gloves for protection.
