Energy Efficiency Ratings for Lighting
Whether it’s a lamp or ambient lighting, we rely on lights a lot in our home. All light bulbs and lighting appliances will come with its own energy label that displays its energy efficiency rating.
A bulb’s energy rating is calculated by dividing the number of lumens, meaning the amount of visible light, by the number of watts. This tells us how much energy it’s using to produce a satisfactory level of light.
As well as shopping for bulbs that are labelled as energy efficient, there are other things you can do to ensure your home lighting is more energy efficient overall:
- Using pendant lights can reduce the amount of lights you need as they spread the light out
- Stay on top of turning off lights when you’re not in the room
- Using more LED bulbs around the home
