FAQs
How deep should deck posts be?
As a general rule of thumb, deck posts should be at least one-third of their total length when buried into the ground. This maximises structural integrity and allows for higher load levels. But before you begin digging up your garden, consider the soil type, height of your deck and local guidelines.
How high should decking railing be?
The height of your railing should also be determined on local building guidelines. Generally, we recommend no higher than 36 inches above the deck surface to the top of the railing. This is mostly down to safety precautions, but if your deck is built above ground or near water, you can opt for a higher railing height of 42 inches.
Can I add railing to an existing deck?
The short answer is, yes. You’ll need to be extra cautious when installing railing to the existing deck to ensure structural integrity and the same compliance with local guidelines. Depending on the design of your current deck, you may need to install additional deck posts or supporting elements to promote a secure and reliable structure.
