In June 2012, over 200 Wickes colleagues joined together in an amazing challenge to cycle across the entire country, and visit all 217 Wickes stores to support blood cancer patients in the UK.
With the goal of completing the challenge over the course of just 10 days, colleagues got on their bikes and collectively clocked up over 3,500 miles between them for the Big 10 Cycle Challenge. Wickes Marketing Director, Rob Murray, wanted to create a challenge which would see everyone from all corners of the company come together and achieve something great to help beat blood cancers. After months of planning and organising routes the challenge was completed with great success; bringing everyone together as a team striving to secure a better future for all blood cancer patients and raising over £37,000 for our charity partner Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research!
Since October 2006 when our partnership with Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research began, we have raised over £2million for the charity dedicated to research into blood cancers. Wickes colleagues, customers and suppliers across the UK have enthusiastically taken on a whole range of fun and creative fundraising initiatives.
Not only were Wickes colleagues busy last year organising cake sales, fancy dress days, head shaves and back waxes, but they took on some innovative and crazy challenges in aid of Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. One group of colleagues conquered the entire length of the River Thames by cycling, running and canoeing over 215 miles, whilst others held a wheelbarrow race covering 18 miles between our Hanworth and Twickenham stores. In between numerous football and softball tournaments, colleagues were also busy completing sponsored walks, marathons, rowathons and cycle challenges as well as launching themselves out of planes and bungee jumping off Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge. Two colleagues from the newly opened Nuneaton store even became world record breakers with the longest darts marathon! Along with the enthusiasm and commitment to fundraising shown by Wickes colleagues in 2011 and since our partnership began, all these activities have been generously supported by our customers and suppliers.
Managing Director, Jeremy Bird said at the time: "Passing the landmark figure of £2million is exciting for all of us and we're proud to have been able to make such a contribution to the life saving work of Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research." The partnership has had a positive impact on our business by bringing colleagues and stores in different regions together through our charity work and helping us engage more with our customers.
Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research are delighted with the news of our £2million achievement and thanks to this investment, survival rates are improving all the time. Cathy Gilman, Chief Executive of Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, said: "Wickes colleagues have shown an incredible commitment to fundraising for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research over the past five years. The fantastic total reached is down to the hard work and dedication of Wickes colleagues and the generosity of their customers and suppliers. All the money raised will go towards vital research into better treatments and cures for leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma."
Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research is the only UK charity solely dedicated to research into blood cancers, including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Around 30,000 people, from newborn babies to grandparents are diagnosed in the UK with blood cancers every year.
Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research needs to raise £100million over the next five years to continue its life-saving research into better diagnosis, treatments and cures for all those with blood cancers, to ensure people of all ages are given the best possible chance of survival and of living a normal healthy life after treatment for blood cancer.
