Looking to update your décor, but worried about removing the skirting boards? This can be an easy task, and it makes some decorating jobs a lot easier to carry out. Keep reading for a step-by-step guide on how to remove skirting boards.

You will need:

Step-by-step guide

Step 1: score the boards

Using a retractable knife, score across the top and sides of the skirting board. This will cut through any paint or caulk, making it easier to remove without damaging the rest of the wall.

Step 2: prise behind the skirting

Starting at one end of the board, prise a brick bolster behind it, and knock it down with a hammer.

Top tip: place a piece of plywood between the wall and the bolster to stop it from leaving any marks or damage.

Step 3: pull the skirting away from the wall

Use the bolster to gently pull the skirting slowly towards you.

Step 4: continue across the wall

Continue down the skirting board, prising it away from the wall. At about halfway, you should be able to finish removal with your hands.

Some skirting boards will be secured with pins or nails, and some will just be attached with adhesive. Remove the board in the same way for each.

Step 5: clean up the walls

Remove any extra caulk from the wall with a knife or chisel - be sure to also take out any nails that might be left behind.

Clean the area of any dust, chipped wood, and loose nails.
