How do you fit shiplap cladding?

You can enhance the appearance and durability of your walls in a few short steps. Firstly, measure the area that you plan to install the cladding to; this will help you to calculate the amount of material needed. Before you begin to attach the cladding, you’ll need to prepare the surface by making sure it's clean, dry and free from any protrusions.

Once your area is prepped, you can begin installing your shiplap cladding to the bottom of the wall. We recommend that you use a level to ensure that it stays straight and evenly spaced. You’ll want to secure each board with nails or screws, inserting them into the wall framing or studs for maximum stability.

Don’t forget to leave a small gap between each cladding board so that your boards have room to expand and contract during extreme temperatures. Continue installing the cladding row by row while overlapping the edges of each component to create a watertight seal. You can also trim the boards to fit around doors, windows and corners.

Finish off the installation by introducing trim pieces along the edges, and applying a protective coating to enhance the cladding’s longevity.

Do I need a membrane under cladding?

We recommend you use a membrane under your cladding, such as our Wickes Bitumen Damp Proof Membrane Liquid. This will protect the underlying structure of your building from moisture infiltration. The membrane will act as an extra barrier against water intrusion, which can significantly damage walls and insulation over time.

Where can I fit exterior cladding?

You can install exterior cladding on roofs, walls, soffits, gables, fascias, dormers, porches, and entryways. This will not only enhance the appearance of a structure, but it’ll offer exceptional weather protection too. Additionally, the surface will become much more durable and energy efficient.
