A waste disposal unit is installed under your kitchen sink and grinds up food waste into small particles which can then be flushed down your drain and into the wastewater system.
How do you clean a waste disposal unit?
Before cleaning a waste disposal unit, ensure that you’ve read the manufacturer's instructions to understand the recommended cleaning process. You should also ensure that the unit is switched off at the breaker box before cleaning.
Most waste disposal units can be cleaned by pouring bicarbonate of soda down the drain into the disposal, followed by roughly 100ml of white vinegar. Allow the mixture to fizz for 10 to 15 minutes before pouring water down the drain to rinse away any residue.
Are waste disposal units legal in the UK?
It’s legal for homes in the UK to have a waste disposal unit installed as part of their kitchen. However, since March 2025, it has been illegal for businesses to dispose of food waste through drainage systems.
