Tool Theft Prevention
Powerful sculpture symbolising tool theft epidemic unveiled in West Yorkshire, the UK’s tool theft capital
Research reveals over a third (38%) of UK tradespeople have been victims of tool theft, with the vast majority (99%) never recovering their stolen tools. For many, the impact goes far beyond finances, leading to stress, anxiety and disruption to their livelihoods.
To shine a light on the issue, Wickes has unveiled a striking sculpture named Anguish in Leeds, West Yorkshire, identified as the UK’s tool theft capital. The launch marks the start of a nationwide campaign from Wickes, which is pledging to mark over 260,000 tools for free across the UK in 2026 to help protect tradespeople and raise awareness of the growing crisis.
A sculpture representing the hidden impact of tool theft
Crafted over more than 400 hours, the sculpture is made entirely from reclaimed power tools and spanners. Power tools deliberately dominate the structure, reflecting the items most commonly stolen from tradespeople across the UK.
The jagged form of the piece symbolises the emotional and financial turmoil experienced by victims of tool theft.
The impact in numbers
Wickes research found:
- Over a third (38%) of UK tradespeople have experienced tool theft
- The average value of stolen tools exceeds £2,500 per person
- 77% had to replace stolen tools using their own savings
- 21% experienced ongoing stress and anxiety after the theft
- 12% were left temporarily unable to work
- 7% considered leaving the trade altogether
Wickes’ commitment to supporting tradespeople
Following its launch, the ‘Anguish’ sculpture will tour the country, appearing at Wickes Theft Prevention Community Events and FixFest, the UK’s only festival for tradespeople, where Wickes is a headline sponsor and also sponsors the Tool Theft Prevention Zone. At these events, Wickes will be giving out free SmartWater tool marking kits and demonstrating how to use the forensic marking liquid. This liquid is invisible to the naked eye but glows under UV light, is extremely hard to remove, and provides a strong deterrent to thieves. The kits also include high‑visibility tamper‑resistant deterrent labels, ensuring tools are not only marked with forensic technology but also carry a bold, visible warning to ward off potential thieves.
