Lawn wellbeing: feeding

• Start to feed your lawn in spring and then through to the autumn
• Feeding in the autumn helps the lawn cope with the rigours of winter
• The best way to apply feed is to use spreaders, which will give an even and accurate distribution of product
• The frequency of feeding will depend on the type of product chosen. If a liquid lawn food is used, you will need to feed between every two and six weeks. Some granular products can last between six weeks and three months. It is important to select the right format that is suited to your lifestyle

Lawn wellbeing: weeds & moss

• Even with the best care and maintenance, lawns may experience problems with moss and weeds. There are several products to help deal with these issues, but choose carefully. If your lawn is very heavily infested with moss and weeds, then you will probably need to re-seed those areas, as the grass may not be strong enough to colonise
• The best way to apply feed is using a spreader, which will give even, accurate distribution of product
• When using a lawn spreader, always make sure the correct setting is chosen before applying, and make sure you read the instructions
• To ensure an even application, we recommend applying the product on the perimeter and then in tramlines, whatever the shape of the lawn
• If the product setting requires two or more passes over the lawn, this means you have to apply the product over the lawn a number of times. For example, Miracle-Gro Evergreen Complete requires three passes on setting 4 on the Evergreen Easy+ Spreader
• We recommend that you cover the lawn area in different directions, crisscross, to avoid tramlines between each row where no product has fallen

Lawn wellbeing: scarifying

• For the average lawn, give your lawn a good rake in the spring and autumn, using a wire-toothed rake
• You will be surprised at how much dead grass you rake out; however, this will allow more space for grass to grow and thicken, and less opportunity for weeds and moss to grow
• Rake the grass vigorously to remove a build-up of dead materials such as moss, leaves and grass

Lawn wellbeing: aerating

• Aerating is also known as spiking
• This is good for a poorly drained lawn and will help relieve compaction
• It's important to do on a lawn with a heavy moss problem
• Although you can buy specialist tools, it's easy to just use a garden fork
• Stab it into the ground every 15cm, then give it a wiggle

Lawn wellbeing: mowing

• Start mowing in spring with a higher blade setting
• Gradually lower as the season progresses
• Mow once a week in spring, sometimes twice a week in summer
• Stop mowing late autumn/winter
• Regular mowing keeps weeds down and encourages a thicker lawn
• Don't mow during prolonged dry weather, waterlogged or frosty or frozen conditions

Lawn wellbeing: dressing

• Use lawn dressing after raking and aerating to improve the structure of your lawn
• This helps it to develop stronger roots and withstand a harsh winter
• It will even out any lumps and bumps in your soil and help prevent puddling that occurs during winter rain
