Why does my white gloss paint turn yellow?

Sometimes white gloss paint can turn yellow over time due to the paint reacting with its surroundings, but it doesn’t necessarily mean the paint has gone bad. Oil based or solvent based gloss paint particularly experiences this due to lack of natural light, ageing, heat from radiators, cooking and smoke, and poor surface preparation. 

Can you add white spirit to gloss paint?

You can, but it depends on the type of paint and what you’re trying to achieve. For oil or solvent based gloss, you can add it to thin the paint but only in small amounts and according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Adding too much can reduce the paint’s coverage, durability and sheen. 

Please note, you cannot add white spirit to water-based gloss paint as it isn’t compatible with it. 

Can you paint over white gloss?

Yes, but it’s important to prepare the area first. Gloss paint has a smooth, hard finish which can make it difficult for a new coat of paint to adhere properly.

How to remove white gloss paint from wood

1. Make sure your work area is protected by covering floors and surrounding surfaces
2. Start scraping loose paint with a paint scraper to remove any flaking or loose gloss. You should hold the scraper at a shallow angle to avoid damaging the wood.
3. Sand the surface, being careful not to do it too aggressively
4. Use a paint stripper if needed in stubborn areas 
5. Clean and prepare the wood once the gloss has been removed and allow it to dry thoroughly. 
6. Finally, lightly sand the surface and wipe again before applying a new primer or paint.
