Yes, it’s recommended that you lightly sand your wooden worktop before oiling it. This smoothens the surface, while also removing any dirt and opening up the wood grain so the oil can properly sink in. Plus, it means your oiling will likely last longer.
How do you oil a wooden worktop?
To successfully oil a wooden worktop, you’ll need to:
- Clean, dry and lightly sand down the surface for a smooth surface.
- Clean away any dust, before applying your oil with a clean cloth or brush, following the natural grain of the wood.
- Let the oil soak in according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Wipe away any excess oil to ensure non-sticky results.
- Allow your oil to fully dry and then repeat with 1 or 2 more coats for optimum protection, letting each coat dry before applying the rest.
- Once fully cured, your worktop will be well-protected, water-resistant and easier to maintain.
Why is my wooden worktop sticky after oiling?
