With a few different decking materials and fitting options to choose from, it’s important to think about what’s right for your project. Consider the style of your garden, as well as other things like exposure to the elements, your budget, garden layout and more.

Different material options

Timber deckboards

  • The classic option with a timeless natural look
  • They’re pressure treated to extend their lifespan
  • Designed to be reversible for easier, more versatile installation
  • Can be painted for seamless integration with the rest of your outdoor area
  • Requires treating or sealing for added protection
  • Requires fairly frequent maintenance

Composite deckboards

  • No need for staining or sealing
  • Designed to be an environmentally friendly option
  • Very little maintenance required with a surface that’s also easy to clean
  • Resistant to mould, moisture, UV, fading and stains
  • Can’t be painted or stained
  • More expensive option compared to timber

  • Affix timber boards with steel decking screws
  • Affix composite boards with specialist screws
  • Come in a variety of sizes
  • Single thread
  • Made for exterior use
  • Should be at least 2.5x longer than the thickness of your boards
