Autumn is a season of preparation - longer nights, cooler days, and the switch to heating season. It’s the perfect time for tradespeople to help customers make homes warmer, more efficient, and future-ready. With energy prices still high and new grants available, demand for energy-efficient solutions is strong. Wickes is here to help with practical products, quick-access services, and expert guidance.

Energy Price Cap: Why Efficiency Still Matters

Ofgem’s July–September 2025 price cap sits at £1,720 per year for a typical household. While that’s a step down from the peaks we saw in recent years, it’s still materially higher than before 2021, meaning energy efficiency remains a top priority for homeowners.

For trades, this creates an opportunity to position yourself as a trusted advisor. Customers are looking for quick wins that can reduce bills now and for long-term upgrades that future-proof their homes. Whether you’re suggesting insulation, draught-proofing, or renewable installations, efficiency is top-of-mind - and autumn is the ideal season to act.

EV Charging Installations: A Growing Market

One of the most exciting opportunities for tradespeople this autumn lies in the expanding electric vehicle (EV) market. Many landlords, flat owners, and renters are now eligible for the government’s EV charge point grant.

  • The grant covers up to 75% of purchase and installation costs, capped at £350 per charge point.
  • Landlords can claim up to 200 residential grants and 100 commercial grants per financial year.

  • Eligibility includes anyone renting, or living in a flat, as long as they have off-street parking and an eligible EV.

The scheme requires installation by an OZEV-approved installer using approved smart chargers, which gives professional tradespeople a clear advantage. Explore Wickes’ range of EV charging products to get started.

Energy Installations: New Opportunities with GBIS

Insulation remains one of the most impactful upgrades a homeowner can make. Thanks to the Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS), running until March 2026, there’s fresh opportunity for trades.

Changes in May 2025 allow households to install two measures in certain scenarios - for example, loft and cavity wall insulation together. This not only maximises savings for the customer, but also creates additional work opportunities for installers.

Cavity wall insulation, in particular, has proven its staying power, with over a million installations recorded between 2013 and 2024 under government schemes. Reconnecting with past customers who may now be eligible for a second measure is a smart way to generate business this autumn.

Draught-Proofing & Quick Wins

Smaller efficiency fixes can be just as valuable - especially in autumn, when customers are looking for immediate savings before winter. Draught-proofing is a cost-effective way to deliver results quickly.

  • Windows, floors, and doors: sealing gaps could save £85–£95 per year.
  • Open chimneysdraught-proofing when not in use can save around £60 annually.

  • Lower thermostat settings: a draught-free home feels warmer, meaning customers may comfortably lower their thermostat. Just a 1°C reduction (from 22°C to 21°C) can save around £100 a year.

Add in insulation top-ups (loft hatch, pipes, hot water tanks, floor gaps), and tradespeople can offer packages of quick, affordable improvements that deliver comfort and cost savings.
