Tile backer board is designed to create a stable and durable surface for tile installation. It’s commonly made from materials like cement, fibreglass or foam. Many tile backing boards have good insulation properties, which can help to reduce energy costs. Backer boards also come with waterproof properties that provide a solid foundation to prevent moisture from seeping into the wall or subfloor.
To fix tile backer boards to a wall, you’ll need to ensure the surface is clean and dry. Then, apply a layer of thin set adhesive to the wall using a trowel. Press the backer board firmly onto the mortar, making sure it is level and secure. Once in place, you can secure it with screws or nails to mechanically fasten the backer board to the wall if you wish to do so, however, this step can be skipped as backer board for tiles can be either mechanically fixed or glued with adhesive.
Tile backer board can be cut with various tools, like a circular saw with a carbide-tipped or diamond blade, a utility knife (often called by the brand name ‘Stanley knife’) or a jigsaw with a coarse-grit blade. Before cutting, measure and mark the board accurately. Support it on a stable surface and cut slowly and steadily to prevent chipping or cracking. Always wear protective gear, such as safety glasses and a dust mask, when cutting backer board.
