Nothing brightens up your garden quite like a colourful flowerbed, but if you don’t have a lawn, you’ll need to create a space to plant some flowers. Thankfully, Kimberley can show you how.
Kimberley also shows us how to paint a fence and how to clean your decking in this series.
Step 1: Take a plank of pressure-treated wood and cut it down to size using a saw. You can make this in any size you like, so use measurements that fit your space. You’ll need pieces for each of the four sides, a piece for the bottom, and some smaller offcuts for the legs.
Step 2: Arrange the pieces and mark out where your screws will need to be. Drill three equidistant pilot holes at each end of the front and back pieces, and at the bottom of the side pieces. This will prevent the screws from cracking the wood when you assemble the box.
Step 3: Use wood glue to secure the end pieces to the bottom, and drive screws into the holes you made earlier. Do the same when securing the front and back pieces to the side.
Step 4: Secure the feet to the bottom using screws.
Step 5: Drill three larger drainage holes in the bottom of the planter box.
Top tip: If you’re making a larger planter box, you’ll want to create more drainage holes.
Step 6: Place a piece of damp-proof membrane into the box to protect the wood. Staple this in place.
Step 7: Sand the box down and apply a wood treatment. This will help it to last longer in all kinds of weather conditions. Make sure to finish the inside as well as the outside.
Step 8: Wait for it to dry and add pebbles for drainage at the bottom, and soil on top of that. Then you can plant your flowers!
And that’s it! Now you’ve got somewhere to plant all your flowers even if you don’t have a lawn.
