FAQs
What is flux in soldering?
Soldering flux is a chemical cleaning agent that’s designed to clean and prep surfaces before and after soldering so that the solder will adhere properly.
What is a soldering iron?
A soldering iron is a tool with a heated tip used to connect metal components together by melting solder onto the metal parts to bond them.
What does solder flux do?
It allows for the solder to bond properly for a secure connection. It contains several ingredients including rosin and acid-based chemicals, and uses activator and additives for cleaning, oxidation prevention and stronger results.
How do you use a soldering iron?
To use a soldering iron, start by heating it up and applying your soldering flux to the surface you’re soldering onto. Then, press the iron tip against your chosen connection point, before gently pushing the solder wire into the same joint, allowing it to melt and bond. Once the solder flows evenly, remove the iron and wire, and let it cool to set.
How do you use solder flux?
To use solder flux effectively, you should:
-
Clean the metal to remove any grease or dirt build-up.
-
Apply a thin layer of flux onto where you will be soldering.
-
Heat the joint with your soldering iron, and the flux with naturally clean the surface and prevent oxidation.
-
Lastly, feed in the solder until it melts and is directed into the joint.
How do you clean a soldering iron tip?
The best way to clean a soldering iron tip is by wiping it while it’s warm with a damp sponge or a sponge dosed in brass wire cleaner to remove any debris or old solder. If the solder is heavily oxidised, you can always apply some fresh solder (tinning) to recoat the tip and remove it as above. For stubborn areas, try special tip cleaner.
How hot is a soldering iron?
Soldering irons usually heat up to around 200°C to 450°C.
