Before re-tiling, you may need to remove any existing tile adhesive. There are a couple of methods you can try, depending on the type and condition of the adhesive. You can use a heat gun, adhesive remover or scraping tools to gently peel or scrape off the adhesive from the surface. Always ensure proper ventilation and safety precautions when using these methods.
That depends on the size and type of tiles, the surface area to be covered and the recommended coverage stated by the adhesive manufacturer. To calculate the quantity you’ll need, measure the surface area to be tiled and consult the packaging or manufacturer's guidelines for coverage rates. You may want to buy slightly more adhesive to account for any wastage or mistakes during installation.
Drying time depends on factors like the type of adhesive, ambient room temperature, humidity layers and the thickness of the adhesive layer. Most tile adhesives will dry and set within 24 and 48 hours but always check the manufacturer's instructions for a specific time.
Not all tile adhesives are waterproof but are labelled as ‘showerproof’ or ‘water-resistant’ due to being able to withstand moisture but not act as a watertight seal against it.
You’ll need to opt for a tile adhesive that states it can handle high levels of moisture, temperature change, frost, and general weathering. We recommend a polymer-modified thin-set adhesive, and weather-resistant, flexible tile mortars.
As a general rule, you’ll need 2-3kg of adhesive per m2 when tiling a wall, or 4-6kg for floor tiling projects.
It’s not recommended you do this as adhesives are designed to properly set tiles, ensuring a secure fit. Whereas grout is specifically designed to fill gaps for a neat finish so it could create risk of shrinkage, a low-quality finish and lack of waterproofing by using it as adhesive.
