Whether you’re looking for cordless or corded hedge trimmers, we offer both as practical choices for keeping your garden looking its best. If you opt for corded, there’s no battery to recharge, and you can keep working for as long as you need, making them ideal for longer trimming sessions.
When choosing a trimmer for hedges, you need to consider the size and type of hedge you’re working on and how frequently you’ll use it. This will help inform your decision on what’s right for you and your space. Keep your hedges looking tidy, shaped and at their best throughout the year, and add this essential to your garden power tools collection.
FAQs
How to sharpen hedge trimmer blades
The way you sharpen hedge trimmer blades can differ slightly depending on the type of hedge trimmer you have, so we’d always recommend checking the manufacturer’s instructions first. However, as a rule of thumb:
- Switch off and unplug the trimmer, and for cordless, remove the battery
- Clean the blades by removing any leaves, sap or dirt
- Put the trimmer on a stable surface and keep it secure so the blades can’t move
- Use a suitable file (usually a flat metal file) and follow the existing angle of each cutting edge rather than trying to create a new angle
- Sharpen each tooth, working on one cutting edge at a time and moving the file in one direction along the edge
- Check the blades are even and that there’s no obvious damage or bent sections
How to use a hedge trimmer
- You need to first plan your trimming by deciding how much growth you want to remove to avoid cutting more than necessary.
- Start trimming at the bottom or sides (working from the bottom up) and keep the trimmer moving rather than keeping it in one place for too long. It’s important you use smooth and controlled movements.
- When you get to the top of the hedge, hold it at a comfortable angle and work along the length of the hedge.
- Allow the trimmer to do the cutting and don’t force the blades. If you’re struggling to cut thicker branches, stop and check the maximum cutting capacity to avoid any damage.
How to clean hedge trimmer blades
- Switch off the trimmer, unplug or remove the battery
- Use a stiff brush or dry cloth to remove loose debris
- Clear away sap and residue but avoid soaking the tool or getting any electrical components wet
- Lubricate the blades with a cutting-blade lubricant to help keep the blades moving smoothly
Can a hedge trimmer cut branches?
Yes, but only up to a certain thickness. The maximum branch size will vary depending on the trimmer you have, so we recommend checking its maximum cutting capacity before use.
